Latin with Secondary School Teaching Certification

Latin Major with Teaching Certification
Latin majors study the linguistic, literary, and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean world through courses in language, literature (both in the original and in translation), and art and archaeology. The areas of emphasis are Latin literature and Roman culture, as a complement to the language instruction at the secondary level.

For the Latin teaching major, students must fulfill the requirements for the Latin B.A. degree (32 units) while concurrently fulfilling the requirements of five courses (15 units) in the College of Education, and a Methodology course with Practicum (5 units) and Student Teaching (12 units) in the Department of Classics. Students should plan their curriculum in the College of Education with the Basic Latin Program Director.

Career Orientations
In addition to teaching skills and national certification for secondary school teaching, Latin teaching majors will be prepared to do research and make scholarly contributions in the fields of language acquisition, teaching methodology, and effective pedagogical techniques. Students should be aware that there is currently a nationwide shortage of high school Latin teachers and employment opportunities are promising.
